October 14, 2005The Lake DistrictCraggy peaks and rolling hills dressed in splendid drystone walls of slate. We stayed in a cottage apartment, part of what used to be a "gentleman's residence". Sandstone window frames and a large gravel drive welcomed us home from long rambles along the bank of Lake Windermere. In perfect weather for walking, cool and overcast, we felt cosseted by expansive banks of heather and braken, dotted with remote sheep folds. A disneyland for walkers, the entire area is covered in trails and National Trust reserves. Even the towns and houses are things of beauty. Walls made of slate slabs, no building material more permanent, are crafted with a randomness of exquisite consistentcy. In the evenings, our legs comforably exhausted from exploring this drizzly piece of heaven on earth, we drank coffee by the warmth of a wood stove. Other information:
