They stand watch
outside my apartment.
They stood beside me as a child,
in my garden.
Outside graduate school they stand
tall and strong.
They greeted me
on my way to Mendocino,
to my future home
overlooking the Pacific.
Hot and dry,
they offer their bark-strewn shade.
They came from Australia;
they secretly populated the world
just for me.
